This month will officially bring in spring, which typically begins a very busy sales season for you all. There are some important things to note as you prepare for spring sales.
On Thursday, February 29, the Province released its annual budget, and introduced a new tax on electric vehicles, effective January 1, 2025. The annual $200 tax will be paid when owners register their vehicles. The new tax won't apply to hybrid vehicles. It will take some time to understand specifically which models are subject to the new tax and which are not. The government says this is in lieu of the fuel tax that currently used to maintain roads.
January sales figures reflect a strong showing in Alberta, with sales up by 9.4%. There is concern among dealers around softness in showroom traffic and increasing used inventories.
I attended the CADA Summit in Toronto, which sold out and the Canadian International Auto Show, which set a record for attendance. Many great discussions on topics such as EV transition, AI integration and OEM Views from the Top. Much of the conversation was focused on the future and what challenges and opportunities await.

Quarterly Inspection Report
AMVIC has announced a fee increase effective April 1st that you will need to reflect on all documentation and digital platforms. Please ensure any and all templates, your bill of sale, advertisements, online calculators and any other documentation or publications are updated to reflect the AMVIC vehicle sales levy change to $10 by April 1, 2024. I have confirmed with AMVIC that the date on your bill of sale will determine which levy is due (pending deals will require the $10 charge if the Bill of Sales is dated April 1st or later). See the AMVIC notice for further information by clicking here.

MNP: Parliament passed Bill S-211: Are you ready to meet the new requirements?
The Canadian Parliament passed Bill S-211 or Fighting Against Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act on May 3, 2023, to protect vulnerable populations from human rights abuses and exploitation. The bill has received royal assent and will impose strict reporting requirements on Canadian businesses when it takes effect on January 1, 2024.
Bill S-211 will have a significant impact on the way Canadian businesses contract within the supply chain and may affect your organization if it produces, sells, or distributes goods in Canada or elsewhere, imports goods produced outside of Canada into the country, or controls an entity engaged in either of the above activities.
The Act will also encourage your organization to re-evaluate and accelerate its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies. It is essential to review your organization’s current ESG strategy before Bill S-211 takes effect to ensure the material topics you have identified in your “S” or “social” pillar align with this important new development.

Driving Forward: Navigating the Surging Auto Theft Crisis in Canada's Dealership Landscape
In the constantly changing Canadian auto dealership industry, the increasing problem of auto theft is a major concern that doesn't seem to be getting better. Experts predict it will become even more problematic, affecting consumers who may face higher insurance premiums in an already inflationary environment.
In 2023, the financial impact of auto theft hit a record-breaking $1.2 billion, and 2024 is expected to surpass this alarming figure. Despite government efforts, organized auto theft is on the rise, posing a significant threat to the industry throughout the year. The insurance sector faces additional challenges due to provincial legislation constraints, a shortage of vehicle parts, and delays in repairs, creating a tough environment for auto dealership owners.

DealerPILOT: What is Diversity and Inclusion?
We have been hearing more and more on this topic and it is certainly one worth paying attention to but what does D&I really mean for business?
Beyond the jargon, the notion of D&I is actually the “bundling” of a number of practices to strengthen your organization and also ensure good corporate citizenship and a reflection the dynamics of the communities we serve.
Over the coming weeks we will take a peek at these concepts and briefly introduce them to the conversation.
